The project was commissioned by TED-Ed and based on the research of psychiatrist Dr. Terry Kupers. The script explores the psychological effects of solitary confinement, connecting the experience of forced isolation with something many people have felt in more everyday circumstances.
I found this approach particularly powerful, linking a familiar emotional state with a complex human rights issue can open the door to greater empathy, especially toward incarcerated individuals, who are often treated as if they deserve fewer rights.
Published in July 2025, the video has already garnered over 3.1 million views on TED‑Ed’s Youtube channel, a response I’m grateful for and humbled by.
